ERA-CAREERS supports research institutions across Europe in embedding the European Charter for Researchers through shared learning, Communities of Practice, and evidence-based policy action.
ERA-CAREERS Mission
The ERA-CAREERS project aims to help institutions and research ecosystems strengthen research careers in a coherent and sustainable manner by supporting the systemic implementation and uptake of the European Charter for Researchers.
Through participatory diagnostics, role-based capacity building, inclusive Communities of Practice, and iterative policy co-creation, ERA-CAREERS enables institutions to translate the principles of the Charter into effective policies and practices across Europe. In doing so, the project contributes to creating more attractive and sustainable research careers, as well as improved working conditions and career development opportunities for researchers.
The Approach Behind the Change
1. Understanding Research Career Challenges
Through 5 national and 3 thematic clusters, ERA-CAREERS identifies the challenges and opportunities shaping research careers across Europe. Participatory approaches generate evidence-based insights to guide learning, collaboration, and policy action.
2. Building Skills Through the Learning & Certification Hub
A digital Learning & Certification Hub will be created to provide flexible, role-based learning pathways for researchers, career support professionals, and institutional leaders. Modular learning and certification opportunities will support the integration of the European Charter for Researchers into everyday practice.
3. Connecting Communities Through Peer Exchange
A Pan-European Community of Practice and 4 Thematic Communities will be established to create spaces for institutions and stakeholders to exchange knowledge, co-create solutions, and share approaches for improving research careers.
4. Shaping Policy for Sustainable Research Careers
Evidence and lessons learned from across the project will feed into policy briefs and the Research Careers Summit, supporting the long-term uptake of the European Charter for Researchers across Europe.
